The MARQUEE, Hertford – 20.05.06

Dead Heaven were billed outside the venue as ‘the bastard sons of Iggy Pop and Depeche Modewhich initially filled me with confusion and wonder, how could two artists so opposite be embodied in one band?  What I was to discover to my joy was a band that, even though there was the rare split second where they sounded like Iggy or Depeche, seemed to have put a 1000 influences in to a massive blender and delivered the most amazing smoothie. I’m not sure how much was actually on the backing track, though from what I could hear it was just drums and the occasional keyboard line. Throughout their 45 minute set I could hear Joy Division, The Cure, The Sisters of Mercy, The Smiths, David Bowie, Bauhaus & even newer acts like the Killers, Muse and the Kaisers. The guitar sound wavered between Bauhaus/Smiths/Killing Joke, that kind of dischordant BIG sound full of echo, whilst the vocalist/bassist twanged along the lines of The Sisters (any era)/The Cure and sounded vocally like a cross between Gary Numan & Ian Curtis but with the power of Pavarotti. The Numan influence was given a nod by the duo doing an excellent rocked up version of ‘We Are So Fragile’, a Tubeway Army b-side dating back to 1979. The band were also selling an EP which I bought and am still playing on a daily basis. My Favourite tracks at the moment are ‘Everything of You’ and ‘Dorian Gray’.

To conclude, Dead Heaven are a brilliant duo and I would advise people to look out for them. Their professionalism is obvious through both their live performance and recordings, and I am so surprised to learn that they have had no interest from major or indie labels to date.    Ian Clone - Hertfordshire

(lifted from Trash Monroe's forum):

"Next up are a band I've been wanting to see for a few years now DEAD HEAVEN, I have been in regular contact via the internet with these guys for almost 2 years but never actually met them , we’ve always talked about doing a gig together but never got round to it, so when the two band members Baz and Nino arrive its like we are all old mates. DEAD HEAVEN are a two piece band with backing tracks but this aint karaoke its retro goth rock industrial, live guitar, bass and vocals over programmed synth and drums, a bit early Numan, a bit Bowie, a bit 80s, this is a cool sound that I imagine would be even better at ear splitting levels in a hot sweaty under ground club."

"Well - I'm pleased we finally got a few people from the AFENet together to see Baz and Nino - I know a lot of you have heard of them but not seen them. There isn't much I can add to what I've already said about Dead Heaven - a mix of Bauhaus and The Cure with a dash of the Smiths thrown in for good measure. Very focused and tight as a gnats chuff it is always a pleasure to watch them (and most of us were - I know Baz's arse has a fan club ALL of its own) and they are one of those bands you cant help but watch as they have captivating stage presence."
